Type 11 Errors on the Power Macintosh
Power Macintosh users have reported an increase in the number of Type 11
errors (resulting in system crashes). While Type 11 errors are not specific
to the Power Macintosh, they seem to be more common because of a number of
issues related to the RISC-based processor. Listed below are suggestions from
Quark Technical Support that may minimize the number of Type 11 errors on
your Power Macintosh. (This information is current as of March 23, 1995.)
1. Run Apple's "Update 1" if you are using System 7.5
Apple has recently shipped an updater for System 7.5 called "Update 1" that
fixes a number of known causes of Type 11 errors for System 7.5 running on
Power Macintoshes. Type 11 errors (resulting in system crashes) may occur for
the following situations:
* in low memory situations (general System instability)
* when pasting large blocks of data
* when using the Apple Serial Driver
* when using SCSI Manager to read, write to, and write from large external
hard disks
* when using WindowShade in low memory situations
* when launching or using Stickies
Note: You can get Update 1 directly from Apple via AppleLink or their
Internet FTP site at ftp.apple.com. See "Locations of Updates" at the end of
this data*fax.
2. Run Apple's Network Software Updater
Apple has identified problems with the built-in Ethernet on Power Macintosh
and 68K models that may cause Type 11 errors when you are working in
applications or documents over a network. The updater titled "Network
Software Installer ZM1.5" from Apple fixes these problems. (See "Locations of
Updates" at the end of this data*fax.) It updates network software to the
following versions:
* LaserWriter Bridge 2.0
* AppleTalk 58.1.5
* Network Control Panel 3.0.2
* EtherTalk 2.5.7
* Apple Ethernet NB file 1.0.1 (contains drivers for all Apple NuBus Ethernet
cards)
* Apple Ethernet LC file 1.0.1 (contains drivers for all Apple LC Ethernet
cards)
* Apple Ethernet CS file 1.0.1 (contains drivers for all Apple Comm Slot
Ethernet cards)
* Apple Built-In Ethernet 1.0.1 (contains drivers for all built-in Ethernets)
* TokenTalk 2.5.7
* Token Ring Control Panel 1.0.1
* Token Ring driver 2.5.2 for the TokenTalk NB Card
* Token Ring driver 1.0.2 for the Token Ring 4/16 NB and Token Ring NB/c Card
* A/ROSE 1.2.1, for use in some token ring configurations
3. Disable the Modern Memory Manager
If you are experiencing Type 11 errors while running software in emulation
mode, you might want to try disabling Apple's Modern Memory Manager control
panel. To run a 68K application on a Power Macintosh, the computer loads a
68K software emulator into RAM. The emulator enables the Power Macintosh RISC
processor to run 68K software properly. If the emulator becomes corrupt as it
loads into RAM, subsequent failures are usually reported to you as Type 11
errors. In several instances, the Modern Memory Manager has been identified
as corrupting the 68K emulator as it loads into RAM.
4. Check for QuickDraw GX leftovers
If you removed System 7.5's QuickDraw GX technology, the desktop printer
icon(s) may be left behind. Remove all desktop printer icon(s) left behind -
since without the Quickdraw GX technology in place, they can cause Type 11
errors.
5. Check your hardware
Apple has identified problems with some third-party RAM chips, NuBus cards,
cache cards, and SCSI devices that may cause random Type 11 errors. If you
have third-party (non-Apple) hardware, check with your dealer or an
Apple-authorized technician to ensure that the hardware is suitable for use
on Power Macintoshes.
If you are using third-party video or graphics cards, check with the
manufacturer to be sure that you are using the latest version of the driver
software.
Below is a list of Radius and SuperMac graphics cards that are incompatible
with Power Macintoshes:
* ColorCard/24 and ColorCard/24 SE30
* ColorLink SX/2 and Color Link SX/T
* Color Pivot NuBus, Color Pivot IIsi, Color Pivot LC, and Color Pivot SE/30
* DirectColor/8, DirectColor/16, DirectColor/24, and DirectColor/GX
* DoubleColor DC/T, DoubleColor SX, and DoubleColor SX/T
* FPD Classic, FPD II, FPD Plus, FPD SE, and FPD SE/30
* Futura SX/8, Futura SX, Futura MX, and Futura LX
* GS/C
* Monochrome Card
* Pivot II, Pivot IIsi, Pivot LC, and Pivot SE/30
* PrecisionColor 8
* QuickColor
* Spectrum/8, Spectrum/8 si, Spectrum/8 LC, Spectrum/8 PDQ, Spectrum/8 Series
II, Spectrum/8 Series SE/30, Spectrum/8 Series III, Spectrum/8*24 PDQ,
Spectrum/8*24 PDQ si, Spectrum/24, Spectrum/24 PDQ, and Spectrum/24 Series
III
* Thunder/8
* TPD-II, TPD-IIsi, TPD-SE, and TPD-SE/30
6. Examine your System
If you continue to experience random Type 11 errors after investigating the
areas listed above, you many want to try removing or disabling non-Apple
system extensions and control panels. This checks for conflicts between them
and the operating system, or between Apple control panels and extensions.
Disable extensions using System 7.5's Extension Manager or a third-party
alternative, or remove them from the system folder and restart your computer.
If you are running After Dark (a popular screen saver from Berkeley Systems),
you must be running version 2.0x or later to be compatible with Power
Macintoshes. If you install and use earlier versions, you may get Type 11
errors.
